Status EN
Habitat loss and degradation through illegal logging and conversion to agriculture as well as fires are the main threats.

Habits
Usually in pairs.
Food
Mainly fruit, including figs. Also small mammals, insects.
Voice
Male a hoarse, coughing 'kuk-kuk kuk-kuk-kuk'. Female similar but of higher pitch. Also loud whooshing wingflaps.

A hollow in a large tree.

Incubation: by female. Female is sealed into nest and fed by male and other helpers.
Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
rugosus (Begbie, 1834) - Malay Pen. and Sumatra.
corrugatus (Temminck, 1832) - Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo.
Similar Species
Wreathed Hornbill (Rhyticeros undulatus) which is larger and has a less colorful face pattern.
