Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 1,830 m, occasionally to 2,250 m.

Bangladesh (B), Bhutan (B), Cambodia (B), China (mainland) (B), India (B), Indonesia (B), Laos (B), Malaysia (B), Myanmar (B), Nepal (B), Pakistan (B), Philippines (B), Singapore (B), Sri Lanka (B), Thailand (B), Vietnam (B).

From Pakistan east to China and the Philippines, and south as far as western Indonesia.

Estimated population is unknown (2020) and increasing.

Nest
In a cavity in a tree branch or post.

Subspecies
Closely related to Sri Lanka Barbet (Psilopogon rubricapillus), with which forms the so-called "Xantholaema group". Forms described from peninsular India, confusa from north-western and lutea from south-east, synonymous with indica.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

indicus (Latham, 1790) - North-eastern Pakistan east to southern China, south to Sri Lanka, Singapore and Vietnam.
delicus (Parrot, 1907) - Sumatra (Indonesia).
roseus (Dumont, 1816) - Java and Bali (Indonesia).
haemacephalus (P. L. S. M�ller, 1776) - Northern Philippines (Luzon and Mindoro).
homochroa (Dziadosz & Parkes, 1984) - Tablas, probably Romblon, possibly Masbate.
celestinoi (Gilliard, 1949) - Catanduanes, Biliran, Samar, Leyte.
intermedius (Shelley, 1891) - Philippines (Guimaras, Negros, Panay, Calagayan, Pan de Azucar).
cebuensis (Dziadosz & Parkes, 1984) - Cebu.
mindanensis (Rand, 1948) - Mindanao.
