Habitat
Tropical and subtropical, primary and secondary evergreen and deciduous forest-types, mixed coniferous forest, swamp forest, open woodland, forest edge, bamboo, grasslands, savannas, scrub, farmland edges. From sea-level - 2,100 m.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh (E) (B), Cambodia (B), China (mainland) (B), India (E) (B), Indonesia (B), Laos (B), Malaysia (E) (B), Myanmar (B), Thailand (B), Vietnam (B).

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat loss, hunting and trade in feathers are the main threats.

Habits
Wades and forages for food in shallow water. A good swimmer. Family groups roost in trees.

Food
Mainly fruits, invertebrates, reptiles, and other small animals.

Voice
Male territorial call is far-carrying 'ki-wao' which is often repeated. Female gives loud 'aow-aa', with emphasis on first syllable.

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • muticus Linnaeus, 1766   -  Java. Was also known from the Malay Peninsula from the northern part extending south to Kedah.
  • spicifer Shaw, 1804   -  North-western Burma. Formerly also north-eastern India and Bangladesh. Possibly extinct.
  • imperator Delacour, 1949   -  Burma to Thailand, southern China and Indochina.
