Habitat
Primary and secondary evergreen forest. From sea-level - 1,500 m, and from 1,700 - 1,900 m.

Laos (B) (NB), Malaysia (B) (NB), Vietnam (B) (NB).

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat loss and degradation, through commercial logging, illegal timber extraction, clearance for agricultural plantations, encroachment by shifting cultivators and road-building, disturbance and snaring at display arenas, are the main threats.

Voice
A very loud 'woo'o-wao' uttered at the dancing grounds. Also series of far-carrying 'oowaaaa' phrases.

Subspecies
Genus name has frequently been misspelt Rheinartia, and even in past Rheinhardius, Rheinardius, Rheinartius or Rheinhardtius, amongst others.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

ocellata (Elliot, 1871) - Central Vietnam and eastern Laos.
nigrescens Rothschild, 1902 - Mountains in central Peninsular Malaysia, within Taman Negara National Park.
