Primary and well-regenerated, closed canopy, evergreen forest. From sea-level - 300 m.

Brunei Darussalam (B), Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Singapore (E).

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation due to large-scale commercial logging, hunting are the main threats.

Voice
A low-pitched 'tak-takrau', a vibrating throaty 'purr' and a loud 'kak' when alarmed. Low clucking when foraging.

Subspecies
Has alternatively been placed in genus Acomus or genus Houppifer.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

erythrophthalma (Raffles, 1822) - Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra.
pyronota (Gray, GR, 1841) - Northern Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Bornean Crestless Fireback (Lophura pyronota).

Similar Species
Male easily told from Crested Fireback (Lophura ignita) by red facial skin, plain underparts and distinctive tail, but care should be taken to separate it from Salvadori's Pheasant (Lophura inornata).
