South-eastern Australia from south-central and south-eastern Queensland south to south-eastern South Australia (south to southern Eyre Peninsula and Kangaroo I) and southern Victoria.
 
Population
Estimated population is 200,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Status LC
Habitat loss and degradation are the main threats.

Usually in pairs or small flocks. Occasional solitary.

Nest
Bottle-shaped, bulky, on its side, composed of dried grasses and lined with feathers, in a bush or tree in thick foliage. Sometimes in the outer, loose, material of an eagles or crows' nest.

Eggs (Guide)
4 - 7; pure white; oval; about 18 x 13 mm. Incubation: 12 - 15 days; by both sexes.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 10 - 12 days.
