Subspecies
Part of a superspecies that probably includes also Senegal Batis (Batis senegalensis), Grey-headed Batis (Batis orientalis), Chinspot Batis (Batis molitor) and East Coast Batis (Batis soror). Marginal range overlap with Chinspot Batis (Batis molitor) from northern Namibia east to northern South Africa. Isolated population in extreme south of range possibly represents an additional, as yet undescribed subspecies.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
affinis (Wahlberg, 1855) - South-western Angola (southern from Benguela), Namibia, western Botswana and north-western South Africa (north-western northern Cape).
pririt (Vieillot, 1818) - Central and southern Botswana and western South Africa (east to Free State, in southern from southern Namaqualand east to western eastern Cape).
