Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Results of one genetic study suggest that this species is not related to any others in the genus.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
assimilis Pelzeln, 1868 - Rivers of western and central Amazonia in Peru (eastern from lower R Marañón), Brazil (east to Amazonas-Pará border, including R Solimíµes, R Madeira and lower portions of R Negro, R Juruá and R Purus) and northern Bolivia (lower R Beni and R Guaporé).
transamazonica Gyldenstolpe, 1951 - R Amazon in extreme western Pará (east to mouth of R Tapajós).
