In a tunnel in a bank or the side of a mammal burrow,
Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Rufous Motmot (Baryphthengus martii) and has often been regarded as conspecific. Populations of Nicaragua and Costa Rica formerly separated as subspecies costaricensis but now considered inseparable from semirufus.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
semirufus (Sclater, PL, 1853) - Eastern Honduras, eastern Nicaragua, Caribbean slopes of Costa Rica and Panama, north-western Colombia and western Ecuador west of Andes.
martii (Spix, 1824) - Amazonian Basin in eastern Ecuador, south-eastern Colombia and north-western Brazil (east to R Tapajós) south to eastern Peru and northern Bolivia.
