Habits
Usually forage in pairs, often widely separated, or alone. Often in mixed species flocks.

Voice
Several extremely high, thin notes, each slightly lower than the preceding, 'tseeet, tseeet, tsee'.

Subspecies
Not recognized as a species by BirdLife International. Sometimes considered conspecific with White-bellied Piculet (Picumnus spilogaster) and with Golden-spangled Piculet (Picumnus exilis).

Sometimes treated as conspecific with White-bellied Piculet (Picumnus spilogaster), but vocalizations differ. Although initially described as a full species, was later lumped in Golden-spangled Piculet (Picumnus exilis) as a synonym of form "salvini". However, latter shown by recent research to be almost certainly a synonym of subspecies obsoletus of Scaled Piculet (Picumnus squamulatus), from which present species differs significantly in plumage details. Further research needed on relationships.
