Subspecies
Closely related to, and may form a superspecies with, Great-tailed Grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus) and occasional hybrids between the two reported along coast of southern USA (in Texas and Louisiana).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
torreyi (Harper, 1934) - Eastern USA from Long I (New York) southern along coast to northern Florida.
westoni (Sprunt Jr, 1934) - Most of peninsular Florida.
major Vieillot, 1819 - South-eastern Texas eastern along coast to extreme south-western Mississippi.
alabamensis Stevenson, HM, 1978 - Southern Mississippi eastern along coast to north-western Florida.
