Vagrant to Puerto Rico.

Proposed subspecies richardsoni, described from Oaxaca (Chimalapa, in Tehuantepec), in southern Mexico, synonymized with dickeyae.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

• audubonii Giraud Jr, 1841   -  Extreme southern USA (southern Texas) and north-eastern Mexico (Nuevo León and Tamaulipas).
• graduacauda Lesson, 1839   -  Eastern Mexico (San Luis Potosí­, southern Tamaulipas and north-western Veracruz).
• nayaritensis van Rossem, 1938   -  Western Mexico (Nayarit and western Jalisco).
• dickeyae van Rossem, 1938   -  Southern Guerrero and Oaxaca (Sierra Madre), possibly also Chiapas, in southern Mexico.
