Subspecies
Genus sometimes placed in family Emberizidae. Reported as hybridizing with Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea) in captivity but reports of hybridization in wild apparently incorrect.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
grandior Griscom, 1934 - Western and south-western Mexico from Colima, Michoacán and interior Guerrero east to southern Puebla and southern on Pacific slope of Oaxaca to south-western Chiapas.
leclancherii Lafresnaye, 1840 - Coastal central Guerrero, in south-western Mexico.
