Subspecies
Formerly placed in a monotypic genus, Pyrrhuloxia, mainly on account of its unique bill shape, very different from that of Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis). However, intermediate bill of Vermilion Cardinal (Cardinalis phoeniceus), as well as other arguments, has resulted in its return to present genus.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

fulvescens (van Rossem, 1934) - Southern USA (southern Arizona) and north-western Mexico (Sonora, Sinaloa and western Durango south to northern Nayarit).
peninsulae (Ridgway, 1887) - Extreme north-western Mexico (Baja California southern from c. 27� north).
sinuatus Bonaparte, 1838 - Southern USA (southern New Mexico east to south-eastern and central Texas) and southern in central highlands and eastern lowlands of Mexico to north-eastern Jalisco, Michoac�n, Quer�taro, San Luis Potos�� and Tamaulipas.
