Proposed subspecies rarissimus (described from Chietla, in Puebla) subsumed in nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

• dilutus van Rossem, 1934   -  Breeds north-western Mexico (central Sonora, south-western Chihuahua, northern Sinaloa). Wintering areas not known.
• chrysopeplus (Vigors, 1832)   -  Western Mexico (central Sinaloa and western Durango southern on Pacific slope to northern Guerrero and south-western Puebla).
• aurantiacus Salvin & Godman, 1891   -  Southern Mexico (highlands of southern Chiapas) and adjacent Guatemala.
