Subspecies
Genus has sometimes been placed in Coerebidae or Parulidae or even, because of an apparent close relationship to Acanthidops, in Emberizidae. Molecular phylogenies indicate that it is most closely related to Xenodacnis and to Acanthidops, Haplospiza and Catamenia (the last three genera currently placed in Emberizidae), and that all clearly belong in present family. Members of this clade may also be closely related to the Oreomanes - Conirostrum clade. This species forms a superspecies, and formerly considered conspecific, with Slaty Flowerpiercer (Diglossa plumbea) and Rusty Flowerpiercer (Diglossa sittoides), genetic data suggesting that the three form a monophyletic group.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • baritula Wagler, 1832   -  Central Mexican highlands from Jalisco, Guanajuato, Hidalgo and Veracruz south to Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca. Also coastal chain in Guerrero and Oaxaca.
  • montana Dearborn, 1907   -  Highlands of southern Mexico (Chiapas), Guatemala and El Salvador.
  • parva Griscom, 1932   -  Highlands of western and central Honduras and central-northern Nicaragua.
