Subspecies
Placement of genus in present family has been questioned; in particular, recent research indicates that it appears not to form part of a monophyletic parulid family, and a more recent study suggests that it may belong with the cardinals (Cardinalidae). This species forms a superspecies with Grey-throated Chat (Granatellus sallaei) and Rose-breasted Chat (Granatellus pelzelni). Subspecies francescae sometimes treated as a separate species on grounds of its geographical isolation and plumage differences.

Additional proposed subspecies melanotis (described from San Blas, in Nayarit) regarded as a synonym of nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • venustus Bonaparte, 1850   -  Western Mexico from Sinaloa south to Chiapas.
  • francescae Baird, SF, 1865   -  Tres Marias Is, off Nayarit (western Mexico). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Tres Marias Chat (Granatellus francescae).
