Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,300 - 3,100 m, occasionally up to 3,500 m.

Range (Guide)
El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico.

Population
Estimated population is 50,000 - 499,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Affinities uncertain. Probably closest to Rufous-capped Warbler (Basileuterus rufifrons). Subspecies intergrade. Geographical variation to some extent clinal, upperparts tending to become duller and extent and width of black upper border to supercilium (lateral crownstripe) decreasing from north to south.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • bateli Moore, RT, 1946   -  Western Mexico (south-eastern Sinaloa and western Durango south to Michoacán and México).
  • belli (Giraud, 1841)   -  Eastern Mexico (south-western Tamaulipas and eastern San Luis Potosí south to northern Oaxaca and central Veracruz).
  • clarus Ridgway, 1902   -  Southern Mexico (southern Morelos, southern Michoacán, Guerrero and extreme western Oaxaca).
  • scitulus Nelson, 1900   -  South-eastern Mexico (eastern Veracruz, eastern Oaxaca and Chiapas) south to western Honduras and north-western El Salvador.
  • subobscurus Wetmore, 1940   -  Central Honduras.
