Habitat
Humid to semi-humid pine-oak-alder, pine, and cypress forest with a dense, undisturbed understorey. From 1,800 - 3,500 m, but is most common above 2,800 m.
Highlands of southern Mexico (eastern Chiapas) and Guatemala (east to Sierra de las Minas).
 
Population
Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat destruction, degradation and fragmentation through human use such as coppicing for charcoal production, timber extraction, farming, flower production, animal-grazing and subsistence wood-cutting, are the main threats.

Voice
Song is a series of chips and trills. A high thin 'tsiu' call.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Forms a superspecies with Red Warbler (Cardellina rubra) and has been considered conspecific, but differs in plumage (especially head pattern) and no indication of increased similarity in north-west of range, where geographically closest.
