Subspecies
Species originally named as Geothlypis cucullata, but that name invalid, as preoccupied. Affinities within genus not known. No obvious close relatives. Has been suggested that subspecies karlenae or possibly an undescribed subspecies may occur on the Volcanes de Colima (western Mexico). Further study is required.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
nelsoni Richmond, 1900 - Sierra Madre Oriental (from south-eastern Coahuila south to west-central Veracruz and northern Puebla), in central Mexico.
karlenae Moore, RT, 1946 - Central highlands of Mexico from Distrito Federal and southern Puebla south to Oaxaca.
