Habitat
Lakeshore and river marshes comprising cattails and hard-stemmed bulrushes. From 1,700 - 2,800 m.

Mexico (B) (NB).

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat destruction and degradation through drainage of marshes and planting with crops, is the main threat.

Voice
A harsh nasal 'chreh' call. Song is a rapid series of 'chip' notes.

Subspecies
Affinities within genus not known; no obvious close relatives.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

limnatis Dickerman, 1970 - Southern Guanajuato and northern Michoacán, in central Mexico.
speciosa Sclater, PL, 1859 - State of M�xico (central Mexico).

Similar Species
Common Yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas) which has pale legs, lighter appearance, less rich underparts and lacks ochraceous wash on flanks. Male has less extensive black forecrown and lacks greyish wash around mask.
