First Described (Guide)
(Bonaparte, 1855)

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,800 - 3,000 m, occasionally 1,500 - 3,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Mexico.

Western Mexico in southern Sinaloa, northern Nayarit and southern Durango, and from Jalisco and Colima east to western Puebla.
 
Population
Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Sometimes placed in genus Buarremon or Atlapetes. Has sometimes been treated as conspecific with White-browed Brush-finch (Arremon torquatus). Birds from Sinaloa described as subspecies verecundus, but appear too poorly differentiated to warrant recognition.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • verecundus Moore, 1938   -  Mountains of western Mexico (southern Sinaloa, northern Nayarit and southern Durango).
  • virenticeps (Bonaparte, 1855)   -  Western, central Mexico.
