Subspecies
Formerly considered close to, and has been considered conspecific with, Rusty-crowned Ground-Sparrow (Melozone kieneri), but differs in both adult and juvenile plumages. Subspecies cabanisi sometimes considered to represent a separate species. Subspecies hartwegi often treated as a synonym of nominate.
biarcuata (Prévost & Des Murs, 1846) - Highlands of Guatemala, western Honduras and El Salvador.
cabanisi (Sclater & Salvin, 1868) - Highlands of central Costa Rica. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Costa Rican Ground-sparrow (Melozone cabanisi).
