Subspecies
Relationships of this species unclear. Generally placed close to Aimophila, but molecular studies suggest that it is part of a group that also contains Melospiza, Passerculus, Xenospiza, Pooecetes, and Henslow's Sparrow (Passerculus henslowii) and Baird's Sparrow (Passerculus bairdii). Subspecies poorly differentiated. Specimens from Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes and Michoac�n reported as being intermediate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

palliatus (van Rossem, 1938) - Western Mexico in Sierra Madre Occidental from eastern Sonora and south-western Chihuahua south through eastern Sinaloa and western Durango to Nayarit and western Zacatecas.
superciliosus (Swainson, 1838) - Southern part of central plateau of Mexico in Jalisco, Aguascalientes and Guanajuato east to Tlaxcala and west-central Veracruz, south to Michoac�n, Morelos, Puebla and central Oaxaca.
