Vagrant to Aruba, Denmark, Gibraltar, Iceland, Netherlands Antilles, United Kingdom.
Breeds in Canada (mainly east of Rocky Mts) from south-eastern Yukon, west-central and southern Mackenzie, northern and central Saskatchewan and northern Manitoba east to Newfoundland, south to south-central Alberta, southern Saskatchewan, southern Ontario, Vermont and Nova Scotia, and in north-eastern USA south to north-central North Dakota, northern and eastern Minnesota, central Wisconsin, central Michigan, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and northern Pennsylvania. In non-breeding season found in south-eastern Canada (southern Maritimes, south-eastern Quebec, rarely southern Ontario), in USA from eastern South Dakota, southern Wisconsin and southern Michigan south to south-central Florida and Gulf Coast, and from southern Arizona east to southern Texas, and in northern Mexico (south to northern Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, rarely to Sonora); also uncommonly along Pacific coast from extreme south-western Canada (southern British Columbia) south to extreme north-western Mexico (northern Baja California).

Genus probably close to Junco. Hybrids between present species and Golden-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia atricapilla), White-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) and nominate subspecies of Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis) reported.
