Thought to form a superspecies with Pine Siskin (Spinus pinus) and Eurasian Siskin (Spinus spinus). Hybridizes with Pine Siskin (Spinus pinus) of southern subspecies perplexa, progeny showing intermediate characters; may be conspecific, but extent of reproductive isolation between these two taxa requires further research.
