Subspecies
Additional proposed subspecies include intermedia (from interior and southern areas of San Francisco Bay region of California), synonymized with rufula, and canicauda (from north-western Baja California), treated as a synonym of henshawi.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

phaea Osgood, 1899 - Extreme western USA from western Oregon (R Columbia) southern along humid coastal belt to California border.
margra Browning, 1992 - Interior southern Oregon.
rufula Ridgway, 1903 - North-western California coast from Oregon border south to San Francisco Bay area.
fasciata (Gambel, 1845) - Coastal central California (from western Monterey County south to central San Luis Obispo County).
henshawi Ridgway, 1882 - Interior and coastal southern California, and extreme north-western Mexico (north-western Baja California).
