Voice
Similar to that of Spot-breasted Wren (Pheugopedius maculipectus), 'see-see, wee-lee-vee'.

Subspecies
In the past, suggested as possibly conspecific with Spot-breasted Wren (Pheugopedius maculipectus).

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

sonorae van Rossem, 1930 - Southern Sonora and northern Sinaloa, in north-western Mexico.
pallidus (Nelson, 1899) - Central Sinaloa and western Durango south to Jalisco and north-western Michoac�n.
lawrencii (Ridgway, 1878) - Mar��a Madre I (Tres Mar��as Group), off Nayarit (western Mexico).
magdalenae (Nelson, 1898) - Mar��a Magdalena I (Tres Mar��as Group).
grandis (Nelson, 1900) - Drainage of R Balsas (southern M�xico, Morelos, south-western Puebla, northern Guerrero), in western Mexico.
felix Sclater, 1859 - South-western Mexico from south-eastern Jalisco south to western Oaxaca.
