Humid pine-oak or fir forest, partial clearings. From 2,100 - 3,150 m, occasionally 2,000 - 3,200 m.

Subspecies
Suggested as being closely related to Band-backed Wren (Campylorhynchus zonatus), but ranges overlap and no evidence of interbreeding. Subspecies nelsoni has been suggested as possibly a separate species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

megalopterus Lafresnaye, 1845 - Highlands of central Mexico from Jalisco and Michoac�n east to western Puebla.
nelsoni (Ridgway, 1903) - Eastern Puebla, west-central Veracruz and northern Oaxaca (southern Mexico).
