Subspecies
Suggested as being closely related to Band-backed Wren (Campylorhynchus zonatus), but ranges overlap and no evidence of interbreeding. Subspecies nelsoni has been suggested as possibly a separate species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
megalopterus Lafresnaye, 1845 - Highlands of central Mexico from Jalisco and Michoacán east to western Puebla.
