Mexico.

South-central Mexico, from Guanajuato south to near Isthmus of Tehuantepec (Oaxaca).

Population
Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Perhaps most closely related to, and forming a superspecies with, Curve-billed Thrasher (Toxostoma curvirostre). Both similarly close to the Brown Thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) superspecies.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

ocellatum (Sclater, 1862) - Mexico.
villai Phillips, AR, 1986 - Oak-pine highlands of southern Mexico (Puebla to Oaxaca).
