Estimated population is 50,000 - 499,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Has been treated as conspecific with Black-billed Thrush (Turdus ignobilis). Geographical variation minimal and probably clinal.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

differens (Nelson, 1901) - South-eastern Mexico and Guatemala.
rafaelensis Miller, W & Griscom, 1925 - Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and north-western Costa Rica.
plebejus Cabanis, 1861 - Costa Rica and western Panama.
