Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,800 - 3,500 m.

Mexico.

Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010).

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • maternalis (Phillips, AR, 1991)   -  South-western Chihuahua to southern Jalisco, in north-western Mexico.
  • pinicola (Sclater, PL, 1859)   -  South-western Mexico (Veracruz and Michoacán to southern Guerrero and southern Oaxaca).
