Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland, hot desert. From sea-level - 2,400 m.

Range (Guide)
Mexico, USA (B).

Vagrant to Canada.

Population
Estimated population is 4,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • lepida van Tyne, 1925   -  South-western USA and north-western Mexico.
  • nitens (Swainson, 1838)   -  Southern USA (southern Texas) south to southern Mexican plateau.
