Along with Bushy-crested Jay (Cyanocorax melanocyaneus), San Blas Jay (Cyanocorax sanblasianus) and Yucatan Jay (Cyanocorax yucatanicus) were formerly placed together in a separate genus, Cissilopha (the black-and-blue jays of Middle America).
