Subspecies
A sister-species of Beautiful Jay (Cyanolyca pulchra).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
mitrata Ridgway, 1899 - Eastern Mexico (extreme south-eastern San Luis Potosí and Veracruz) south to central-eastern Oaxaca).
guatemalae Pitelka, 1951 - Southern Mexico (Chiapas) and northern Guatemala (Huehuetenango, Alta Vera Paz).
hondurensis Pitelka, 1951 - Western Honduras (Caribbean slopes).
cucullata (Ridgway, 1885) - Caribbean slope of Costa Rica and Panama, extending locally across to Pacific slope.
