Proposed subspecies dearborni (described from central-southern Guatemala) requires substantiation, and is currently synonymized with nominate.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

• ramosi Phillips, AR, 1991   -  South-eastern Mexico (southern Veracruz east to north-central Chiapas and Quintana Roo, south to eastern Oaxaca).
• pulchellus Sclater & Salvin, 1859   -  South-eastern Mexico (south-eastern Campeche, south-western Quintana Roo), Guatemala (except central highlands), Belize and Caribbean slopes of Honduras and northern Nicaragua.
• verticalis Ridgway, 1885   -  Nicaragua (on Caribbean slopes), Costa Rica and western Panama (eastern Veraguas).
• viridiceps Ridgway, 1903   -  Central Panama (east to Panamá province).
