Subspecies
Geographical variation in colour over most of extensive range generally slight, considered not to merit taxonomic recognition. Described subspecies clara (Panama) synonymized with nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
unirufus Sclater, 1859 - Southern Mexico (eastern from northern Oaxaca) east to northern Honduras and eastern Nicaragua, and south to Panama and western Colombia (east to middle Magdalena Valley).
