Subspecies
Validity of several subspecies doubted, nominate and brodkorbi known only from holotype specimens. Further study is required.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
pygmaeus Coues, 1865 - South-western USA (east-central and south-eastern Arizona, at least formerly west-central and south-western New Mexico) and north-western Mexico (Sonora, southern Coahuila). Winters south-central Mexico (south to Michoacán and Morelos).
rubicundus Cabanis & Heine, 1860 - Highlands in central Mexico locally from Durango south to Morelos and Puebla. Winters south to Guatemala.
