Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 600 - 3,500 m.

Range (Guide)
El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, USA (B).

Population
Estimated population is 2,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Validity of several subspecies doubted, nominate and brodkorbi known only from holotype specimens. Further study is required.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • pygmaeus Coues, 1865   -  South-western USA (east-central and south-eastern Arizona, at least formerly west-central and south-western New Mexico) and north-western Mexico (Sonora, southern Coahuila). Winters south-central Mexico (south to Michoacán and Morelos).
  • rubicundus Cabanis & Heine, 1860   -  Highlands in central Mexico locally from Durango south to Morelos and Puebla. Winters south to Guatemala.
  • fulvifrons (Giraud, 1841)   -  Tamaulipas (eastern Mexico).
  • fusciceps Nelson, 1904   -  Highlands of southern Mexico (from Oaxaca) southern locally to Guatemala and El Salvador.
  • brodkorbi Phillips, AR, 1966   -  Southern Oaxaca (southern Mexico).
  • inexpectatus Griscom, 1932   -  Central and southern Honduras.
