In a burrow in sandy soil and rocky crevices.

Subspecies
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Townsend's Shearwater (Puffinus auricularis) which is smaller with quicker wing-beats, clean cut black-and-white plumage and white flank patches, Pink-footed Shearwater (Ardenna creatopus) which is larger and flies higher and Audubon's Shearwater (Puffinus lherminieri) which is smaller.
