Habitat
Temperate grassland, shrub-steppes and deserts. From sea-level - 2,000 m.
Canada (B), Mexico (NB), USA (B) (NB).
Southern Canada from southern Alberta to south-western Manitoba, south through west-central USA to northern Texas; winters south to northern Mexico.
 
Population
Estimated population is 20,000 (2010) and increasing.
Status LC
Habitat destruction and degradation through cultivation, over-grazing and fire, and the controlling of small mammal populations (prairie-dog towns and gopher populations) limiting food resources, are the main threats.
