Habitat
Usually near water, in areas with large trees to provide lookout perches.

Canada (B) (NB) (P), Mexico, St Pierre and Miquelon (B) (NB), USA (B).

Vagrant to Belize, Bermuda, Ireland, Puerto Rico, Russia (Asian), Virgin Islands (U.S.).

Population
Estimated population is 300,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with White-tailed Sea-eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla). Subspecies alascanus / alascensis synonymous with washingtoniensis.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • leucocephalus (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Southern USA southern to north-western Mexico. .
  • washingtoniensis (Audubon, 1827)   -  Aleutian Is, Alaska, Canada and northern USA.
