Range (Guide)

Mexico, USA (B).

North-western Mexico, in Gulf of California; rare in southern California, USA.

Population
Estimated population is 60,000 (2010).

Fish, invertebrates, carcasses or marine mammals, offal. Also small seabirds and pelican eggs.

Subspecies
Until recently treated as a subspecies of Western Gull (Larus occidentalis), but differs in vocal repertoire, particularly its lower-pitched long call. Some authorities consider it more closely related to, and perhaps derived from, Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus).
