Tschudi, 1843
Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Falkland Islands (Malvinas), Panama, Peru.
Unknown to South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
Inland deserts (mainly Atacama) of northern Chile and probably southern Peru; feeding birds and non-breeders range along coast from Ecuador (Manta, virtually on equator) south to south-central Chile (Valdivia).
 
Population
Estimated population is 25,000 (2010).

Nest
A scrape in the sand, usually near rocks, on barren montane desert, 35 - 100 km inland.
Subspecies
Most closely related to Heermann's Gull (Larus heermanni ).
No subspecies.
