Description (10)
Image of Passenger Pigeon
  Male: slate grey upper parts, with a blue head and rump. Eye, scarlet. Bill, short, slender and black. Tail, grey and white. Upper breast wine red.

Female: slightly duller.

(Linnaeus, 1766)

Abundance (Guide)
Extinct.

Habitat
Temperate forest.

Range (Guide)
Canada (E) (B), USA (E) (B).

Vagrant to Cuba (E), Mexico (E).

North America, east of the Rocky Mountains, from easternand central Canada to the north-eastern United States. In winter migrated south to the southern United States, occasionally to Mexico and Cuba.
 
Status EX
Probaably once the most numerous bird on Earth. The last wild bird was shot in 1900. The last captive one, named Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoo at 1:00 pm on September 1, 1914. Extinction almost certianly caused by destruction of habitat anf over hunting.

Habits
Sociable. Usually in large to very large (upto several hundreds of thousands) flocks.

Food
Acorns, beechnuts, chestnuts, various fruits, grains and insects.

Nest
A loose platform of small sticks and twigs, about 30 cm in diameter, in a tree. In colonies, sometimes as many as 100 nests in a single tree.

Eggs (Guide)
1; white, ellipsoid. Incubation: about 12 - 14 days; by both parents. Perhaps two broods per season.

Young
Nidicolous, altricial. Fledge in about 14 days. Tended by both parents.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Similar Species
Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) but slightly larger.
