Proposed subspecies tucumana of north-western Argentina invalid. Subspecies albilinea sometimes considered a separate species, incorporating crissalis and roraimae.

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

• fasciata Say, 1823   -  South-western British Columbia (including Vancouver I) south through western USA (Washington, California, New Mexico, western Texas) and most of Mexico to Guatemala, Honduras and north-central Nicaragua.
• vioscae (Brewster, 1888)   -  Mountains of extreme southern tip of Baja California.
• letonai Dickey and van Rossem, 1926   -  Border of Honduras and El Salvador, including Volcán de San Miguel.
• parva Griscom, 1935   -  Northern Nicaragua.
• crissalis (Salvadori, 1893)   -  Costa Rica and western Panama.
• roraimae (Chapman, 1929)   -  Venezuela, known only from Mt Roraima, on border with Guyana.
• albilinea (Bonaparte, 1854)   -  Colombia (Andes, Santa Marta Mts, Sierra de Perijá), northern and southern Venezuela, Trinidad and adjacent north-western Brazil (Roraima), south through Andes of Ecuador, Peru and central Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba, western Santa Cruz) to north-western Argentina (Jujuy, Salta, Catamarca and Tucumán). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Southern Band-tailed Pigeon (Patagioenas albilinea).
• monilis (Vigors, 1839)   -  South-eastern Alaska and western Canada to western USA.
