Subspecies
Very closely related to Long-eared Owl (Asio otus). Populations of north-western South America usually placed in robustus, sometimes included in nominate. Subspecies lambi, noctipetens and barberoi poorly differentiated, and possibly not valid.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
lambi Moore, RT, 1937 - Western Mexican highlands (south-western Chihuahua to Jalisco).
robustus Kelso, L, 1934 - From southern Mexico (Guerrero and Veracruz) discontinuously to north-western Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador.
siguapa (d'Orbigny, 1839) - Cuba and I of Pines.
noctipetens Riley, 1916 - Hispaniola and Ile de Gonâve.
stygius (Wagler, 1832) - From northern Brazil south to eastern Bolivia, north-eastern Argentina and south-eastern Brazil.
barberoi Bertoni, AW, 1930 - Paraguay and northern Argentina.
