Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,500 - 3,500 m, occasionally down to 900 m.

Range (Guide)

El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico.

Population
Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Genus probably closely related to Selasphorus, and sometimes merged into it. Forms superspecies with Bumblebee Hummingbird (Atthis heloisa), with which has been considered conspecific. However, they differ in courtship behaviour, song structure, wing morphology, and coloration, and thus merit treatment as separate species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

ellioti Ridgway, 1878 - Highlands of southern Mexico (Chiapas) and Guatemala.
selasphoroides Griscom, 1932 - Highlands of Honduras.
