Central-southern USA (Arizona, western Texas) through central plateau of Mexico to Jalisco, Michoacan and Puebla. Winters from Nayarit east to Puebla and south to Oaxaca, irregularly north to Sinaloa.

Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged into an expanded version of Calliphlox. Forms a superspecies with Beautiful Hummingbird (Calothorax pulcher). Closely related to genus Doricha, which is sometimes united with present genus on the basis of similar morphological characters.
