Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Green-breasted Mountain-gem (Lampornis sybillae), with which has been considered conspecific. Subspecies ovandensis and nubivagus doubtfully valid, as differences weak; perhaps best treated as synonyms of nominate.
Proposed subspecies connectens, known by single specimen from northern El Salvador, falls within normal range of variation of nominate.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
amadoni Rowley, JS, 1968 - Cerro Baul in Oaxaca (southern Mexico); known only from type locality.
ovandensis (Brodkorb, 1939) - Highlands of southern Mexico (Chiapas) and north-western Guatemala.
viridipallens (Bourcier & Mulsant, 1846) - Highlands of Guatemala, extreme northern El Salvador and western Honduras.
nubivagus Dickey & van Rossem, 1929 - El Salvador.
