Subspecies
Genus often merged into Hylocharis, though external morphology suggests closer relationship to Lampornis. Forms a superspecies with Xantus's Hummingbird (Basilinna xantusii).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
borealis (Griscom, 1929) - Northern Mexico (Sonora, Chihuahua, Tamaulipas); rarely to south-western USA (south-eastern Arizona).
leucotis (Vieillot, 1818) - Highlands of central and southern Mexico to Guatemala.
pygmaea Simon & Hellmayr, 1908 - Highlands of El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.
